The knee is a weight-bearing joint made up of many components, including the patella (kneecap) as well as muscles, cartilage, tendons, and ligaments that surround the bone. When one of these components is injured, it can greatly disrupt a person’s life and keep them from enjoying the activities they love. If this happens, a knee doctor or surgeon can assess and diagnose the knee problem as well as recommend the best treatment option to provide relief and treat the problem.

Our knee doctors have undergone extensive training in orthopedics and are highly skilled medical professionals whose main concern is your well-being. After assessing and diagnosing your injury or condition, our specialists will work with you to develop a comprehensive care plan focused on wellness, prevention, and education. Our knee doctors strive to treat each patient with the utmost care and medical professionalism and are dedicated to offering the latest and most advanced treatment options, including:

  • Arthroscopic surgery

Compare Your Symptoms

It’s important to be seen by a specialty-trained orthopedic doctor or knee surgeon for knee pain as soon as possible, especially before the problem worsens and knee surgery, such as knee replacement, becomes the only viable option. The following signs and symptoms are common to knee conditions and injuries. If you recognize any of these issues, we recommend that you schedule an appointment with a knee doctor:

  • Aching
  • Difficulty bending or straightening your knee
  • Knee instability
  • Limping to avoid putting weight on your knee
  • Stiffness
  • Swelling

One of our specialty-trained knee doctors may diagnose you with one of the following knee-related injuries or conditions:

  • ACL tear
  • Arthritis
  • Collateral ligament damage
  • Fracture
  • Meniscus tear
  • Osgood-Schlatter disease
  • Osteochondritis dissecans
  • Prepatellar bursitis
  • Sports injury
  • Sprain
  • Tendonitis

The Knee

Because the knee is made up of many muscles, tendons, and ligaments, there are many ways that it can be injured or damaged, such as through wear and tear or by participating in a contact sport. Examples of common knee injuries include meniscus tears, anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears, and fractures.

To fully understand the complex structure of the knee and the problems associated with it, knee specialists undergo extensive medical training, which allows them to choose and deliver the best treatment. Sometimes, a knee doctor is able to provide relief for a knee injury using nonsurgical treatment methods, such as an over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medication, physical therapy, or an injection. Other times, a type of knee surgery, like total knee replacement or arthroscopic surgery, may be needed to treat the injury or condition.

At OrthoAlabama Spine & Sports, our knee experts are highly skilled at evaluating, diagnosing, and providing treatment for a broad range of injuries and conditions of the knee. When developing treatment plans, they are committed to exhausting all applicable nonsurgical treatment options first, such as ultrasound-guided peripheral joint injections and physical therapy. However, if nonoperative treatments prove to be ineffective, our knee surgeons will go over all of your surgical options and help you determine which one is best for you.
