Intracept® Procedure
Low-Back Pain Meets Lasting Relief
At OrthoAlabama Spine & Sports, we are proud to offer the latest evidence-based options focused on keeping you healthy and active. In fact, one innovative same-day procedure for low-back pain, the Intracept procedure, got its start with Dr. Bradly Goodman and Dr. Srinivas Mallempati.
In the summer of 2018, Dr. Goodman became one of the first two doctors in the world to perform the Intracept procedure commercially.
A minimally invasive procedure, Intracept is designed to provide long-term relief for those suffering from chronic low-back pain. Dr. Goodman’s first Intracept patient, Kristin M., is an extremely active equestrian professional who is still pain-free today.
How It Works
Evaluation
Using an MRI, your Intracept expert will visually identify endplate damage by seeing any signs of inflammation or degeneration stemming from the basivertebral nerve. This nerve runs through the vertebrae and transmits the pain signals associated with the specific type of low-back pain that the Intracept procedure can treat.
Treatment
Through a small incision in the lower back, a special probe is inserted and guided toward the affected nerve. The probe releases radiofrequency energy, or heat, to stop the nerve from communicating the pain signals.
Recovery
Shortly after the procedure, many patients will begin to experience relief and be able to resume some normal daily activities. If needed, your doctor will schedule sessions with our specialty-trained physical therapists to ensure proper healing and recovery.
